When new products arrive in the salon, we always get excited to try them out and see what they can do. Today the new arrival is label.m’s New Highlighting Toners, available in Blonde, Brunette, Blue and Red and we couldn’t wait to change our colour instantly knowing it will wash out with just one shampoo.
Now firstly these new highlighting toners are not spray on colour as you know it, forget the painted on look and crispy hair of the early 2000’s, hair colour in a spray has grown up. The colours are metallic and sprayed on to dry hair and then blowdried in which gives you a much softer finish, and to be honest just looks like you have coloured your hair. Perfect for a variety of techniques, including a quick cover up on the roots at the last minute! (see below!)
After taking inspiration from the models in the videos we decided to give it a go and see if it really is as easy as they make it look, and guess what, it is! We tried a couple of techniques mixed together to see how the colour would work on both dark hair and light hair, amazingly the colours still show up on dark hair really well, here’s how we got on.
label.m New Highlighting Toners are available in salon. RRP £10.95
What is hair contouring and why do you need it?
Hair Contouring is the latest thing in the contouring trend, it appears to have moved away from the world of make up and into hair. Contouring is the use of shadow and light to shape and mould the features of your face to enhance your looks, so how do we make this work for your hair?
Your stylist uses both colouring and cutting techniques to shape your hair, this could be lighter or blonde areas around the face or on particular areas of haircuts to enhance shape and layering through to create softness. Or it could be using dark colour to create the illusion of shadows in the hair and keeping certain areas of a hair cut heavy to give the illusion of density and thickness in both the colour and the cut.
Book a consultation, come and talk to us and we’ll find a colour palette that compliments your skin tone and eye colour and then work with that palette to create the shadow and light to contour.
Have you always wanted that effortlessly beautiful hair that you can just leave to air dry or blow-dry in 10 minutes flat but instead you’ve got a giant ball of frizz that takes hours to blow-dry and straighten just to make it look half decent? Then nanokeratin is your hair saviour and it is suitable for all hair types even damaged! Nanokeratin is a smoothing treatment that eliminates frizz from your hair whilst retaining your hair’s natural movement. For example if you have curly hair the curls will still be there after the treatment but they will be soft glossy frizz free curls, and if your hair is straight but coarse and frizzy, after the treatment it will still be straight but smooth frizz free and so easy to manage.
If you think nanokeratin might be for you the first thing you need to do is come and have a consultation with your hair in it’s natural state and we will assess your hair texture and what your expectations are and then work out the right treatment plan for you. Once you have booked your nanokeratin appointment you are well on your way to frizz free hair!
Firstly your hair will be shampooed 2-3 times with a priming shampoo to cleanse the hair and remove any product build up so that the nanokeratin treatment can work it’s magic to it’s full potential.
Then your hair will be rough dried so we are working with your hair’s natural texture, then the nanokeratin will be applied to your hair in small sections with the excess being combed off each section.
Now you sit and relax for 30 minutes enjoy your drink and flick through some magazines.
Once the 30 minutes is up your hair will be blowdried with the nanokeratin in, and once completely dry your hair will be straightened to ensure it is completely smooth.
Now the nanokeratin treatment is finished your hair will feel as though it has a coating on it, and you cannot get your hair wet, tie it up or tuck it behind your ears for 3 days. (Let’s be honest here by the 3rd day every one who has this treatment is desperate to wash their hair but then once they do they would happily go through it again as the results are well worth it!) When you do shampoo your hair you need to use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner, any of the alterna shampoo and conditioners will be fine but we do recommend the Bamboo Smooth range in particular to maintain the results.
Before and After Nanokeratin
The first picture is the clients natural hair texture and the second picture is the clients hair rough dried 3 days later.
The nanokertain treatment lasts up to 12 weeks, and costs £150.00. It is important to make sure you are using the correct products as it will have an impact on how long the treatment lasts.
So now you know how to get that perfect hair you’ve always dreamed of!
With all the hype lately you might have heard of a new revolutionary product called Olaplex. If you haven’t, allow me to explain, Olaplaex is a three step treatment that changes the rules when it comes to chemically treating your hair. Whether that be colouring, perming, keratin blowdries, even just your everyday heat styling, Olaplex allows you to change your hair drastically in just one day, or change your hair colour regularly, both things that in the past would have dramatically increased your stylists stress levels whilst they try to establish whether or not your hair can handle anymore. Not anymore!
Kim Kardashian going from dark to platinum. The wonder product that made this possible? Yep you guessed it Olaplex. Look how shiny the blonde is, before olaplaex this kind of colour change would not have been possible without lots of damage and breakage. Don’t get me wrong it still didn’t happen in one application and still took hours in the salon but the result is incredible and well worth the time.
So, how does it work? Olaplex is a three step system that can be used in multiple ways to effectively “reset” the condition of your hair. It is a permanent thing that is only undone when more bonds break, e.g. you have your hair coloured afterwards without Olaplex.
No1 The Bond Multiplier is applied in different ways depending on the service you have chosen. If you are having Olaplex as a stand alone treatment in the salon No1 will be applied to your hair at the basins and then left to soak in. If you are having a colour service and adding Olaplex to that service No1 will be added to your colour formula.
No2 The Bond Perfector is applied directly after No1, if you are having a colour service the colour is rinsed after the development time and No2 applied before the hair is shampooed. No2 is left on your hair for a minimum of 10 minutes up to 30 minutes depending on the current condition of your hair (the more damage present the longer we will leave No2 on your hair to work). After this time your hair is shampooed and conditioned as normal and then blow-dried or cut and blow-dried.
No3 The Hair Perfector is your take home product. It is highly recommended you take this product with you to get the most out of your Olaplex service. It is a treatment to use before you shampoo your hair once or twice a week (again depending on the condition of your hair), just like No2 you need to leave it on a minimum of 10 minutes but with No3 you can leave it on as long as you like, (Kim Kardashian famously sleeps with it in).
Now to the science bit, what does Olaplex actually do?
When you colour your hair or do any chemical service bonds are broken within the main structure of the hair and this is what compromises condition, Olaplex restructures these bonds within the hair to repair all of the damage done during in colouring, heat styling, perming, etc. It is this magic that allows us as hairdressers to push the boundaries of what is possible when working with your hair, for example going from dark to blonde in just one day!
We offer Olaplex in two different ways although we always recommend the first option.
- Full Olaplex treatment includes No1 and No2 in salon and No3 to take home £50.00
- In salon only Olaplex treatment includes No1 and No2 in salon £20.00
Olaplex is available to book online when you book your appointment (under the treatments category) or ask your stylist how it will benefit your hair.
We recently hosted an education day at the salon with Wella Professionals to educate 13 stylists from Devon and Cornwall on all the ins and outs of Wella couture colour. Couture colour is the premium ranges of Wella hair colour and you can be sure all of our stylists are educated to the highest level in the latest techniques and technologies to ensure you get the best advice possible and the best hair colour for you.
Our stylist Laura was able to share her knowledge and expertise with a captive audience talking about the Blondor Freelights range, which is specifically designed for sun kissed blondes using balayage and ombre techniques.
Laura was also on hand to offer help and advise to some of the other stylists whilst they tried these new products and techniques on their clients.
Our apprentice Gemma soaked up all the information on offer and is now raring to go with her colour training, we can’t wait to see how she does!
So if you are looking to upgrade your colour or just fancy a change book in for a consultation with one of our talented team members and see what ideas they can offer you! Happy hair colouring!
We all like to see pictures of hair transformations so we thought we would share a few pictures of some of clients before and after having their hair done at Square.
This client was trying to fix a bad colour and cut and wanted something much more natural, still blonde but wouldn’t leave an obvious regrowth, so we applied a colour similar to her natural colour at the roots and enhanced the blonde on the ends using an ombre technique, huge transformation!
This client was a colleague of the client above who after seeing the transformation on her friends hair wanted a similar look but warmer and a little darker, we used a root stretch technique on the root area and darkened down and warmed up the blonde on the ends.
This client was looking to get away from her dry strawy blonde and wanted a darker richer shiny colour and as you can see we delivered, using a variety of rich browns through out the hair.
We will be continuing to take before and after photos so keep checking back to see the new ones!
We recently had the pleasure of spending the day at the Lost Gardens of Heligan to work on a shoot with fashion photographer and film maker Alex Phelps. We thought we’d give you a sneak preview of the shoot behind the scenes and the beautiful gardens.
Alex is using a technique which takes two photos simultaneously that are slightly different so when printed and viewed through a view finder you will see the image in 3D.
You can imagine how stunning the surroundings look when viewed in 3D
When Alex has finished editing the images and they will be exhibited in London and we will have a selection of the images and a viewfinder at Square for you to see, we’ll let you know when they are in!
If you have read our last post you will know we spent a lot of time working on photoshoots recently for various different things so we just thought we’d share some of the behind the scenes photos of our men’s collection so you can see what we have been doing.
You can see all of the final images from this shoot in our gallery here: Gallery
Towards the end of last year we applied to take part in a course called Hair:Mastered With Sam Mcknight. Sam McKnight is one of the most accomplished and well-respected hair stylists of his generation. His work is often seen in magazines, on the runway and on the red carpet. He’s won countless awards but perhaps the biggest accolade is the longstanding creative collaborations he has maintained with some of the best names in the business – Patrick Demarchelier, Nick Knight and Mario Testino; Karl Lagerfeld/Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Balmain and Fendi to name just a few. In the fleeting world of fashion imagery Sam’s permanence is fixed in some of the most iconic images in modern history – Princess Diana’s short, slicked back style, Agyness Deyn’s bleached blonde crop, Madonna’s Bedtime Stories cover, Cate Blanchett getting her Oscar, Tilda Swinton channelling Bowie, both Lady Gaga and her male alter-ego Jo Calderone plus countless covers and editorial stories of Kate Moss and all the supermodels. So as you can imagine we were eager to learn from one of the best and were beyond excited when we found out that we had been selected as one of just 800 global participants out of over 60,000 applicants, we couldn’t wait to get started!
Over the next four months we worked on briefs set by fashion house Emanuel Ungaro, Garage Magazine, Dazed Magazine, Allure Magazine, and Topshop to name a few, we also took part in various opportunities responding to briefs set by Anti-agency, Creative Head Magazine and Ones to watch. For each opportunity we created a photoshoot working closely with photographers, stylists, make-up artists and models faced lots of challenges and created some amazing work.
We received feedback from industry experts on all of our work which was fantastic, it was so good to know the things we were getting right and the things we could improve on in future. Our Expert was Natalie Lukaitis who is a beauty editor for ELLE Magazine, so it was amazing to have her opinion on our work. He she is critiquing the image above: “Fantastic level of research and great moodboards. You’ve made it really easy to follow your journey. I love that you played around with a few styles but knew what the vibe of ‘Ungaro’ hair has been in the past and stayed true to that, with your own spin. You didn’t take the 60s brief too literally and it paid off. I really like the final look and can see that you have taken everything into consideration, including the balance of volume at the back. Well done!” As you can imagine this spurred us on, and we learnt everything we could about this area of the industry, we took part in Q&A sessions with Agents Premier Hair and Make-up, Rosie Vogel the bookings editor for Vogue Magazine, Amber Kallor contributor to many of the big magazines including Glamour Magazine, Marie Claire and ELLE, in these sessions we were able to ask all the questions we wanted to know and get the answers from the biggest experts in the industry what could be more helpful!
As a result of taking part in Hair:Mastered we have had bookings for both fashion shows and photoshoots and it’s an exciting area of the business we are enjoying, we just thought we’d share it with you too!
Keep your eyes peeled for more to come!
